Glooscap First Nation was awarded the Lieutenant Governor's prestigious Community Spirit Award in 2018. Lieutenant Governor Arthur J. LeBlanc presented the award to the Chief and Council of Glooscap First Nation before a packed house at the Glooscap Community Centre. The small community of 400 near Hantsport celebrated the accomplishment by performing traditional dance and music.
The award celebrates the power, strength and diversity of vibrant communities across the province. Up to four communities are honoured each year. Recipients are chosen by a selection committee based on community applications that best fit the award’s criteria. The application was submitted by Glooscap's Mi'kmaq Physical Awareness Coordinator, Jordan Smith.
“This thriving community owns its successes with each and every community member,” said Ms. Smith. “Glooscap is filled with the most optimistic people, willing to work hard to provide a better tomorrow for future generations.”
Three other communties were awarded the Lieutenant Governor's Community Spirit Award:
Cole Harbour, Halifax Regional Municipality
North Mountain, Kings Co.
Prospect, Halifax Regional Municipality
